A 17-year-old Elmont High School senior, Harold Ekeh, applied to 13 schools in hopes of getting into at least one good school. He had no idea he would end up getting accepted to all eight Ivy League schools.
The Nigeria native was accepted to Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Pennsylvania, Cornell, Brown and Dartmouth. Ekeh was accepted to 13 schools in total and is now facing a difficult decision.
The news of his acceptance to Princeton last week made him eight-for-eight for Ivys. He was also accepted to Massachusetts Institute of Technology, New York University, Johns Hopkins University, Vanderbilt University and Stony Brook University.
He told Associated Press in an interview Tuesday that the news of his acceptances was “stunning.” “It’s like getting hit with a brick,” Ekeh said. He added that when he sees the “congratulations,” it tells him that his hard work has paid off.
Ekeh said that he thought he would get into Stony Brook based on his SAT scores and his GPA. He scored a 2270 out of 2400 on his SAT and has a 100.51 grade point average, according to NBC News. He was also a National Intel Science Talent Search semifinalist, and he is editor-in-chief at his school newspaper and vice president of the Model United Nations. And to top it off, he was homecoming king.
Ekeh claimed that his parents have been a large part of his success. He said that their strong work ethic and their desire to succeed in the U.S., after immigrating from Nigeria 10 years ago, set a good example. His mother, Roseline Ekeh said, “we are so proud of him.”
Ekeh also said that his mother inspired him to want to study biochemistry and become a neurosurgeon. His mother started showing symptoms of Alzheimer’s when he was 11 years old and he wants to find a cure.
In addition, he thanked his science teacher, Michele Flannory, for helping him get accepted, according to Huffington Post. And he called the acceptances an accomplishment for his “community.”
He has not decided where he wants to go to college, but he did say that he wants to stay close to home. As of now, he is leaning toward Columbia.
Ekeh is not the only student this year to be accepted into all eight Ivy League schools. Victor Agbafe of North Carolina and Ronald Nelson of Texas were also accepted by them all.
