U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte’s senior aide, Davie Wihby, was arrested on Friday in Nashua on the charge of solicitation of prostitution. On Saturday, Wihby resigned his position, according to Daily Mail.

Wihby, 61, was New Hampshire’s Republican state director for the past year. He was also Ayotte’s number-two staff member behind the chief of staff.

Besides their professional relationship, Ayotte also refers to Wihby as her longtime friend.

Wihby’s work history includes a long period of work as Manchester city alderman and being the former deputy commissioner and interim commissioner of the state Department of Labor.

Besides being the state director for Senator Ayotte, Wihby also serves as vice chairman of the Manchester School Committee.

“I am shocked and deeply saddened that David Wihby, my state director and a friend for many years, has been arrested under these circumstances,” Ayotte said in a statement.

“David obviously cannot continue his duties, and I have accepted his resignation. This is a very difficult time, and my thoughts and prayers are with everyone involved,” she added.

Wihby was arrested at a hotel on Friday when he responded to a woman’s ad online. Similarly, in addition to the arrest of Wihby, over the past week, the Nashua Police has reportedly has arrested ten men on charges of prostitution between the ages of 24 and 62 years of age. The men were all arrested while at hotels after having responded to advertisements from women on the internet.

Wihby will be arraigned sometime at the beginning of May. As of now, he has been released on $2,000 personal recognizance
