University of South Carolina suspends student for writing racial slur on whiteboard

The University of South Carolina suspended a student Friday for writing a racial slur on a whiteboard. According to the school’s president, the student code of conduct will be investigated for violations.

A photograph of the board surfaced on social media Saturday. It depicted a woman making a list of things that caused poor wireless internet service around campus or “reasons why USC WiFi blows.” The first factor on the list was a derogatory term describing blacks.

University of South Carolina President Harris Pastides said that the list was compiled in a study room, as reported by NBC News. Pastides said that the student was suspended and an investigation on the incident would be put in place. He did not say that the person in the photo was the suspended student, nor did he identify the student’s name.

Pastides called the act “disappointing” and “unfortunate.” He said that the incident has caused the “Carolina community to reflect on our values.”

Pastides explained that the university has a code, the Carolina Creed, that focuses on respect. He added that “racist and uncivil rhetoric” have “no place” at the university.

South Carolina’s NAACP chapter agreed that the photo was disappointing. The chapter’s president, Lonnie Randolph Jr.,  said that the photo enlivened the chapter’s battle for “justice and equality.” Randolph added that the image was not “shocking” and that racial comments among college students appear “to be a growing trend in our state and nation.”

Recently, several college campuses across the U.S. have been taking steps toward dealing with racism. On Tuesday, three students were expelled from Pennsylvania’s Bucknell University for making racist comments on the student-run radio station, according to Reuters.

Connecticut College held a campus-wide discussion on Monday after an offensive post was left on a professor’s Facebook page. And, the University of Oklahoma expelled two students and shut down a fraternity house after the students chanted a racist song on camera in March.
