Surface 3 shakes up tech world, takes on iPad for tablet dominance

The Surface 3 boasts a bigger screen that makes it more attractive to professionals who use a keyboard with their tablets for work.

Microsoft has unveiled the Surface 3, and it’s already making waves among the tech world.

The new tablet is a decent size compared with the iPad and begins to look more like what a tablet should look like, along with the capability to use it as a laptop with a keyboard cover, according to a ZDNet review.

The Surface 3 caters to both consumers and professionals, as it runs the full Windows operating system as opposed to some stripped down version that has put off buyers in the past, according to the report.

Its 10.8-inch touch display is wide enough both for using as a tablet and for using along with a keyboard. That is important because improper width makes using iPads with a keyboard a bit clumsy for many, the review states. The iPad Air 2 is only 9.4 inches wide in comparison, compared to the 10.52 inches of the Surface 3 — an extra 1.12 inches that can make all the difference when a person is trying to work on a keyboard.

The Surface 3 uses an Intel Atom processor, which is enough to run Windows 8.1. It is not the fastest processor in the world, but is more than adequate for the uses of Surface 3. More processors are available for the Surface Pro 3. Furthermore, the Atom processor allows the tablet to have all-day battery life without sacrificing performance.

Surface 3 starts at $499, which makes it fairly affordable and is in the ballpark with Apple’s iPad.

With that price tag, buyers are also able to purchase a number of accessories, including the keyboard cover, which runs at $130, as well as a pen for $50.

For those looking to upgrade the performance, you can get one that has 4GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, which helps if you run a lot of apps and costs an extra $100.

In addition, you can get integrated LTE to give you connectivity everywhere, which will cost an extra $100, and obviously you would need to sign up for a data plan with a carrier.
