Leonardo DiCaprio to turn private island into eco-friendly resort

He may not have walked away with an Oscar (yet), but the 40-year-old star best known for his breakthrough role in the 1997 film Titanic is winning praise as an environmentalist after revealing his plans for an eco-friendly resort, according to the Associated Press.

About 10 years ago, DiCaprio bought an island off the coast of Belize called Blackadore Caye. Up until now he has left it relatively untouched, a little slice of “heaven on earth,” as he called it. However, he recently unveiled his plans to create a luxury resort on the property to the New York Times.

The plans show a row of villas built on an artificial reef, including fish shelters, just off the coast of the island. The island would also grow indigenous marine grass to feed and support manatees, as well as replanting mangrove trees. “The main focus is to do something that will change the world,” said the actor. “I couldn’t have gone to Belize and built on an island and done something like this, if it weren’t for the idea that it could be groundbreaking in the environmental movement.”

However, DiCaprio’s plans are not being received well from all quarters. Blue Planet Society, a marine conservation organization, has posted a petition on Change.org asking the actor to leave the island as it is. The petition decries DiCaprio’s plan as just another “resort for the mega rich.”

“We would like environmentalist Leonardo DiCaprio to please reconsider. The world does not need another eco-resort,” reads the petition. “Restore and protect Blackadore Caye by creating a wildlife sanctuary, free from human interference. Turn Blackadore Caye into a wildlife sanctuary, not a rich man’s playground.”

Blue Planet Society also posted on Twitter: “@LeoDiCaprio However you sugar-coat #BlackadoreCaye, this is property development. Human presence rarely improves environments for wildlife.”
