Stunning lunar eclipse is about to appear in California’s Bay Area

The eclipse will be visible in the western sky at dawn today in California for those who are able to rise early enough to see it.

A full eclipse of the moon will be taking place this Saturday — although most people are probably going to miss it.

Residents in the Bay Area in California will be able to see the full eclipse at 4:57 a.m., and it will last for just 4 minutes and 43 seconds, at least as a total eclipse, according to an SFGate report.

The eclipse will be visible in the lower portions of the western sky in the Bay Area, with a partial eclipse visible across other parts of North America, according to the report.

A lunar eclipse occurs when the Earth and moon are aligned perfectly in the sky so that the moon passes into the Earth’s shadow. In that case, the Earth completely obliterates the sun’s light from the moon’s surface, causing it to disappear, although not completely. Sometimes, the moon appears orange-red due to the Earth’s atmosphere distorting the light the passes over it.

The latest eclipse will be part of what is referred to as a tetrad, which is four total lunar eclipses in a row that are six months apart. This happened on two occasions last year and two this year: the one that is going on now, and another one that will happen in September.

Lunar eclipses have a deeply rooted place in folklore and history. In ancient days, they were the cause of deep superstition, and Christopher Columbus famously used his knowledge of an upcoming lunar eclipse to frighten natives in North America into cooperating with them. The Maya of Central America believed that a jaguar ate the moon and also devoured people, and in China ancient peoples believed in a three-legged toad that swallowed the moon. In Egypt, pharaohs believed lunar eclipses were bad omens as the moon was regarded as the ruler of the stars.
