Stanford University offers free ride to students of low-income families

Major California university lowers the requirements for students to receive financial aid.

As politicians increasingly bemoan that the income inequality gap is connected to an education inequality gap, one university has decided to do something about it.

Stanford University in California will offer free tuition to students whose families make less than $125,000 a year.

In addition, the University will provide free room and board to students whose parents make less than $65,000 a year.

The annual fee for a year at Stanford costs about $65,000 with tuition making up $45,000 of that.

“Our highest priority is that Stanford remain affordable and accessible to the most talented students, regardless of their financial circumstances,” said Provost John Etchemendy in a statement. “Our generous financial aid program accomplishes that, and these enhancements will help even more families, including those in the middle class, afford Stanford without going into debt. Over half of our undergraduates receive financial aid from Stanford, and we are pleased that this program will make it even easier for students to thrive here.”

The school claims that 77 percent of its undergraduates will finish college without any student debt.

Stanford University is considered to be one of the best schools in the country. It comes in fourth place on the US News and World Report’s of US university rankings.

It is also one of the most difficult universities to get into. This year, only 5 percent of applicants were accepted.

Other top universities, such as Yale and Harvard, also offer generous aid packages.
