The FBI had an informant within the KKK who alerted them to a plot to kill a black inmate, according to the report.
The FBI has taken down a Ku Klux Klan hit attempt on a black man in rural Florida, according to a recent report.
The Associated Press reported that an FBI criminal informant recorded scenes of a black man who was supposedly slain — faked pictures, in fact — in order to build a case against three Klan members who were working as guards in a Florida prison.
The men were charged with plotting to kill a black inmate after he was due to be released because of a belief that he was spreading HIV and hepatitis after biting one of them during a fight, according to the report.
Police charged Thomas Jordan Driver, 47-year-old David Elliot Moran, and 42-year-old Charles Thomas Newcomb with a count of conspiracy to commit murder each.
The case against them began when an officer — Driver — at the Department of Corrections Reception and Medical Center in rural north Florida had gotten into a fight with the inmate. Moran, who was a sergeant there, and Newcomb were fired from the prison in 2013. Authorities believe all three were members of the Traditionalist American Knights of the Ku Klux Klan. They had been distributing flyers recently that compared Ferguson, Missouri protesters with terrorists, according to the report.
A confidential informant within the Klan alerted the FBI to a possible murder attempt. Last year, Driver allegedly provided the Klan chapter with a picture of the black inmate who was set to be let out on supervised release, indicating that they wanted the inmate to die.
