Days after announcing their intent to add Mulan to their rapidly expanding list of classic animated films that are going to receive the live-action treatment in the near future, Disney has reportedly confirmed that a live-action Winnie the Pooh film is in the works. According to Deadline, indie film writer/director Alex Ross Perry has signed on to pen the script for the film, which will surprisingly depict Christopher Robin as an adult.
Perry is best known for indie films such as Listen Up Phillip and the recent Queen of Earth, but the Pooh film’s reported mature storyline may make him a perfect fit for the project. Deadline revealed Thursday that the plot will focus on an adult Christopher Robin rediscovering the childhood which brought A.A. Milne’s Hundred Acre Wood to life, allowing the film to appeal to both children and adults. Perry’s hiring nearly parallels Disney’s recent decision to hire David Lowery, the mind behind dark thriller Ain’t Them Bodies Saints, onto their upcoming live-action remake of Pete’s Dragon.
The honey-loving stuffed animal’s latest theater outing, 2011’s Winnie the Pooh, rendered the characters of the Hundred Acre Wood in the classic hand-drawn style. There has not yet been any word on how the live-action film will bring Christopher Robin’s childhood friends to life, but critics are estimating a significant amount of CGI will be involved. Fans will likely have answers regarding this matter when Disney reveals more details on their upcoming live-action versions of Dumbo and The Jungle Book, as the animated classic versions of those films similarly featured talking animals.
Disney has not yet confirmed who will direct the Winnie the Pooh live-action film, or given details regarding when it will begin production or see release.
