Mystery swirls around violent NSA shooting incident that left 1 dead, 2 injured

Police did release some new details in the case, including where the SUV was stolen from and how the men behaved after being told to exit.

The violent confrontation between two men dressed as women and security personnel at the gates of the National Security Agency headquarters in Maryland raises plenty of questions that have yet to be answered.

Police say two men dressed as women who were driving a stolen sport utility vehicle ignored officers’ orders at the gate to the NSA in Fort Meade to stop, and when the occupants ignored the order, they opened fire, killing one suspect and wounding the other, according to an Associated Press report. A police officer was also wounded, although it was unclear by whom.

What is not known, at least publicly, is whether the duo wanted to breach the perimeter of the NSA or if the driver became confused in the heavily controlled and highly sensitive area. The FBI is currently investigating it as a shooting incident, and does not view it as terrorism right now.

Authorities did not reveal the conditions of the second suspect and the officer, who had been both been taken to a nearby hospital.

They did reveal that the men stole an SUV Monday morning from a hotel in nearby Jessup, and then drove seven miles to the NSA gate, subsequently ignoring orders from NSA police on how to safely exit the secure campus, according to the report.

Instead of exiting as instructed, the vehicle accelerated toward a vehicle that was blocking the road, prompting police to open fire until it crashed into an NSA police vehicle. Photos of the scene show both vehicles to be heavily damaged.

There’s still no immediate indication as to why the men were dressed as women.

The headquarters are home to about 40,000 workers — 11,000 military personnel and 29,000 civilians. It is a massive campus filled with large satellite dishes and giant glass and steel buildings that is heavily guarded with a large amount of security personnel and fences topped with barbed wire.
