Breakdown: what each GOP candidate thinks about immigration

Clarifying the stances of Republican presidential hopefuls' thoughts on immigration.

One of the many divisive issues that 2016 presidential candidates must consider is immigration. Recent trends seem to suggest that Americans are now far more concerned with national security than the economy. Immigration plays a part in this. And with Obama’s executive action to shield as many as five millions illegal aliens from deportation, battle lines have been drawn.

But do any of the candidates seriously think that 11 million people should be forced to leave the country? Already many of the candidates have offered conflicting statements about what they feel should be done about America’s immigration dilemma. Walking the tightrope between what wealthy donors expect and what the majority of voters want can obscure the true intentions of the next possible president. Below is a breakdown of where the front running candidates stand (or say they stand) on immigration.

JEB BUSH has in fact written a book that outlines a six-point strategy on how to deal with immigration. While he is no longer vocally advocates citizenship for illegals, he is still firm in his support for granting some form of legal status to immigrants.

SCOTT WALKER has in the past said it ‘makes sense’ to create some way for immigrants to obtain legal status. The Wall Street Journal goes so far as to say that Walker favors paths to citizenship (Walker denies he ever said anything like that). However, if asked these days, Walker firmly states that he does not support any type of amnesty for people who entered the country illegally.

MARCO RUBIO, son of immigrants, co-wrote a bill a few years ago that would have created a path to citizenship but it failed to pass the House of Representatives. Rubio still claims to support granting legal status to immigrants but now he is more vocal about his support of tighter border security, an relatively uncontested GOP position.

CHRIS CHRISTIE has previously supported an overhaul of the entire immigration system. Today, he will not answer questions about where he stands on the issue. His state, New Jersey, has joined in the lawsuit against President Obama’s executive order that prevents the deportation of millions of immigrants.

TED CRUZ, the only official candidate thus far, is also the most consistent in his statements on immigration. Cruz feels that borders should be tightened and any new arrivals should be punished or deported immediately. Yet for those already established in the country, a path towards legalization should be created.
