Los Angeles commuter train slams into car, injures dozens

One person was injured critically in the crash, which caused two of the three passenger cars to be derailed.

A commuter train has derailed in Los Angeles, injuring nearly two dozen people after the train struck a car near downtown.

About 21 people on the train suffered mostly minor injuries when the train struck a car and partially derailed, according to an Associated Press report.

One person who was inside the car suffered critical injuries and had to be cut out of the vehicle. Two of the three passenger cars had derailed in the accident, although no further detials were immediately available.

The train is operated by Metrolink, and the accident happened at around 11 a.m. near the campus for the University of Southern California.

Metrolink is the commuter rail system that serves Southern California, and it has seven lines and 55 stations that cover 388 miles. It serves numerous counties in the region, including Los Angeles, Orange, and Oceanside in San Diego County. It is connected to the Los Angeles County Metro Rail system and the San Diego Coaster commuter rail. The system was founded in 1991, and began operations in 1992.
