‘Fish in the Dark’: Who’s set to replace Larry David in Broadway hit?

Larry David’s new play Fish in the Dark has been lighting up the Great White Way, with tickets being more difficult to get than a chocolate babka or marble rye at Schnitzer’s Bakery, the resident “Seinfeld” pastry purveyor.

However, USA Today reveals that Jason Alexander, who played David’s alter ego George Costanza on the show, will take over for him in the lead role on June 9 for an extended six-week run of Fish at the Cort Theatre.

“Not only was I fortunate enough to write for Jason Alexander on ‘Seinfeld,’ but I also had a ringside seat watching his brilliant, indelible performances,” said David in a statement. “Needless to say, I was thrilled when I heard he was replacing me in Fish in the Dark. Finally I can enjoy the show.

“As my mother used to say, ‘Enough is enough,’” continued David, explaining his reasons for leaving the hit show, which has played to mostly sold-out audiences. “I am sure the cast will be relieved to be working with a professional.”

Added Alexander: “I left Broadway 25 years ago because Larry David co-created the show that would change my life and career. It is totally amazing that he also created the show that would bring me back to Broadway. I am thrilled I get to do this hilarious play for him and with this wonderful cast. It is quite simply more fun than any bald man should have.”

Alexander has graced Broadway stages in the past with roles in Neil Simon’s Broadway Bound and Jerome Robbins’ Broadway, with the latter winning him a Tony Award, but has not been onstage in over two decades.
