‘Fifty Shades’ director Sam Taylor-Johnson calls it quits

Sam Taylor-Johnson, the director of Fifty Shades of Grey, will not be directing the upcoming sequel. She announced that she will be leaving the franchise Wednesday night.

Taylor-Johnson called her time directing the film “an intense and incredible journey” and she said she has “Universal to thank for that.” She added that she formed great relationships with the cast, particularly Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson.

Prior to her announcement, she spent some time with Dornan. She posted a photo via Instagram showing the two standing cheerfully beside one another.

Taylor-Johnson failed to mention E.L James, author of Fifty Shades of Grey, in her announcement. According to the Huffington Post, the film’s press tour revealed that the author and director clashed during filming.

Taylor-Johnson told Vanity Fair that she had to keep reminding herself why she was hired. She added that people were “surprised” she had not quit yet.

She also told the magazine that the two “battled all the way through.” She admitted that she fought with E.L. James, but the fights were “creative” and could always be solved. She noted that the process was not “easy,” but that does not mean that “it didn’t come out the right way.”

Fifty Shades of Grey grossed more than $558 million worldwide at the box office. Despite the film’s major success, Taylor-Johnson’s departure from the franchise did not come as a surprise. Taylor-Johnson said that she had not even talked to James about Fifty Shades or the upcoming film.

The film’s screenwriter, Kelly Mercel, is not expected to return either. The producers of the franchise are aiming to put together a new creative team. A release date for the sequel has not been announced.

Although Taylor-Johnson will not be returning, she wished the future director and team of the next two or three films “nothing but success.”
