Death of siblings investigated after bodies found in freezer in Detroit home

The frozen bodies of two children were found Tuesday morning in a deep freezer at Mitchelle Blair’s Detroit home while she was babysitting for a neighbor at another apartment. The deaths are under investigation, with autopsies to be performed once the bodies thaw. The children have been identified as 13-year-old Stoni Ann Blair and 9-year-old Stephen Gage Berry.

Blair’s 17-year-old daughter was reportedly forced to place the body of her sister into the freezer in 2013, after she was beaten with a curling iron and burned with a clothes iron. Stephen had been tortured for about two weeks prior to his death by being choked with a belt, scalded with hot water, and having a plastic bag tied over his head. He died on Aug. 30, 2012. When he was unresponsive Blair wrapped his body in bed sheets and put him in the freezer.

Nine months later Blair strangled Stoni and suffocated her with a plastic bag after the girl said she did not like her siblings. She forced her teenage daughter to place the body of her sister in the freezer. The surviving 8-year-old boy was aware that his siblings had been killed and were in the freezer.

The bodies were discovered by an eviction crew on Tuesday. Blair had asked to stay at the apartment of a friend because she did not want her kids to see her being evicted. She was babysitting for the friend’s infant. Blair was on the phone when police found her, and was heard to say “They’re both dead! I did it!” She told police that she did an evil act, but that she is not evil.

Medical exams of the children and the bodies showed evidence of abuse, including numerous scars. The body of the 9-year-old showed indications of physical abuse including puncture marks. None of Blair’s children were enrolled in school, as she reportedly took them out two years ago for home-schooling. She was investigated for allegations of child abuse in both 2002 and 2005, and referred to counseling.

The fathers of Blair’s children have been determined by the state to be unfit to care for them. The two men have not seen the children for two to three years and owe $50,000 in child support between them.

Blair appeared in court on Thursday and details of extreme abuse emerged. She was reportedly very strict with her children and is charged with child abuse, but murder charges are possible once the autopsies are performed. Bail is set at $1 million. Blair’s aunt has been given temporary custody of the remaining two children. The case is an active homicide investigation.
