Awkward: Leader of viral racist Oklahoma frat chant to meet with black leaders

After being kicked out of the University of Oklahoma and having his fraternity disbanded, Levi Pettit is making the rounds to attempt to repair some of the damage caused by the viral video.

Levi Pettit is the young man captured on the viral video leading a racist chant for the University of Oklahoma’s Sigma Alpha Epsilon chapter on the bus, and now he is attempting to repair some of the damage through a visit with black leaders.

It’s too late to save the frat, which was shuttered by the university, as officials went a step further and kicked Pettit and another frat member out of the school after video circulated of a shockingly racist chant while frat members were aboard a bus, according to an Associated Press report.

Pettit has since personally apologized to the leader of Oklahoma’s Legislative Black Caucus, and is expected to meet with other civic leaders before talking publicly about the incident for the first time since the story broke.

Oklahoma City Democrat Sen. Anastasia Pittman received a call from Pettit to apologize to her for the video, which depicts them calling black people the n-word and making a reference to lynching, saying that black people would never be admitted to SAE.

Pittman arranged for Pettit to meet with various black leaders and students in Oklahoma, saying that she wanted “him to be educated on some of the struggles they’ve endured,” which she said she hoped would “enlighten him” and give him a new perspective, according to the AP report.

Pettit is scheduled to meet with Marilyn Luper-Hildreth, who is the daughter of the late civil-rights leader Clara Luper. Luper was a schoolteacher who had led sit-ins of Oklahoma City drug store counters that were segregated in the 1950s.

An afternoon news conference is scheduled at a Baptist church in a predominantly black neighborhood in the city.
