A Wisconsin state trooper has been gunned down apparently by a bank robbery suspect who was also killed, police say.

The trooper exchanged gunfire with a person who matched the description of a bank robbery suspect, according to Fond du Lac Police Chief William Lamb as quoted in an Associated Press report.

A WKOW report indicated that the suspect stole a bank employee’s vehicle after robbing the bank and fled the scene. Police soon found a dead man lying on the side of the road beside a running vehicle, which police believe to be the suspect’s original vehicle before he ditched it an stole the victim’s. Another robbery was reported in Fond du Lac at about 4:30 p.m., but there is not yet any indication that the robberies are connected.

During a news conference on Tuesday, Lamb said the trooper was following the vehicle of the suspect at around 5:30 p.m. when they exchanged gunfire, which killed both individuals. Authorities did not release any details on either the suspect or the trooper.

Meanwhile, the Wisconsin Department of Justice said that it would be looking into the incident through its Division of Criminal Investigation, among other crimes that took place in the Fond du Lac, noting in a statement that “we cannot confirm at this time definitively these crimes fit together” but they would “provide an accurate timeline of events,” according to the AP report.

The Marinette County Sheriff’s Office had been alerted to a bank robbery int he town of Wausaukee a little bit before 2:00 p.m., and reports indicated that a man had fired a handgun and robbed the bank. Dave Matthews of the Division of Criminal Investigation promised a “large and comprehensive” investigation, but would not provide more details on the situation, according to the report.

Fond du Lac — which is French for “bottom of the lake” — is located on the south end of Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin. It is about 65 miles from Milwaukee.
