Ted Cruz enters the presidential raise with a viable alternative to the Affordable Care Act
It’s called the Health Care Choice Act and it is yet another way that Senator Ted Cruz is putting himself in front of the competition.
Many if not all Republicans with political aspirations are quick to denounce the Affordable Care Act. However, few have offered a viable alternative.
The bill Ted Cruz introduced this month will not repeal the ACA all together. Rather it will send“bill after bill to the president’s desk to stop its harmful effects.”
The Health Care Choice Act would remove ObamaCare’s insurance mandates, one of the most important and most controversial elements of the law. It would also allow citizens to purchase from any state, rather than exclusively from the state in which they reside.
The bill has already been co-sponsored by five Republicans, including Florida Senator Mark Rubio- a potential rival of Cruz for the Republican nomination.
Cruz’s attempts to overthrow ObamaCare may be made easier this summer if the Supreme Court Justices decide to rule in favor of the plaintiffs in the King v. Burwell case. The lawsuit argues that a provision of the 2010 Affordable Care Act had been violated by the Obama administration. The provision in question authorizes federal subsides to people who buy health insurance “through an exchange established by the state” and not the federal government. If the Justices do side with the plaintiffs, nearly 8 million people could lose their healthcare coverage because they cannot afford to buy insurance without subsidies.
The presidential election is a long way off and the total removal of ObamaCare from the laws of the land even further off. In the meanwhile, Senator Ted Cruz as a viable alternative to boast about as he tries to best the other potential presidential candidates.
