Evolution may explain why men are attracted to women with curvy backsides

Maybe it is all about that bass.

A woman’s curves are all the rage today in social culture, but it seems that it’s not just a fad – it’s an evolutionary trait developed over thousands of years. Even more than a woman’s curves in general, big butts are a hot commodity these days, but in this study men were actually attracted to the curve of a woman’s lumbar, regardless of her actual butt size.

Apparently it gets very specific and an actual “optimal angle”, 45.5 degrees, has been theorized in regards to the curve from the back to the buttocks, determined by researchers at the University of Texas at Austin. Study leader David Lewis explains, “This spinal structure would have enabled pregnant women to balance their weight over the hips…These women would have been more effective at foraging during pregnancy and less likely to suffer spinal injuries…In turn, men who preferred these women would have had mates who were better able to provide for fetus and offspring, and who would have been able to carry out multiple pregnancies without injury.”

The researchers note that this preference has evolved over thousands of years and will probably persist for a long time to come. This conclusion was reached after showing 100 men pictures of women and asking them to rate them. The women with the lower back curve closest to the optimum were consistently rated the most attractive. Next, a group of 200 men proved that men preferred the right curvature of the lower back over a bigger butt nearly 100 percent of the time.
