The arrest comes after a multiple week investigation into the poisoning.
Boulder Police arrested a 12-year-old Colorado girl on Friday, accusing her of twice trying to poison her mother for taking away her iPhone.
According to the Boulder County Police, the arrest comes after a weeks-long investigation into the poisonings. The Denver Post reports that on March 2, the girl’s mother, Luciana Cordova, became sick after her daughter allegedly poured bleach in a breakfast smoothie she had made. Although Cordova had smelled the bleach odor in the drink, she assumed it was because her daughter had recently cleaned the glass.
However, a few days after the illness passed, Cordova again noticed a bleach smell coming from a water carafe in her room. According to Fox31 Denver, she then confronted her daughter, who admitted she was trying to kill her mother for taking away her iPhone.
“It seems a little bit of an outrageous reaction to having your phone taken away, but I think it’s also reflecting of how our teens and our kids are so dependent on that, that they’d be willing to those extremes,” Cordova told Fox31 Denver.
The police became involved after the Boulder Community Hospital notified them on March 6 that a loss of cell phone privileges had possibly led to multiple poisoning attempts.
“It’s pretty scary,” Police Commander Heidi Prentup told Fox31 Denver.
The girl is currently being detained at the Juvenile Center in Boulder on two counts of suspicion of attempted first degree murder.
