Machete-wielding man terrorizes New Orleans airport

The man was shot three times after chasing a TSA agent while swinging a machete.

A chaotic machete attack caused passengers to scurry for cover at New Orleans’ Louis Armstrong International Airport Friday night.

Police fired shots at the attacker as passengers fled and got on the ground, trying to hide under chairs, according to a USA Today report.

Witnesses heard three to four gunshots and somebody yell, “Everybody get down!” Police believe 62-year-old Richard White approached airport security and showed a can of bug killer, spraying the agents and passengers in line. After that, he drew out a large machete from his waistband and started swinging it. A TSA agent knocked the machete from his hands with a bag of luggage, and White bolted through the security checkpoint, chasing a female TSA agent, according to police.

Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Deputy Lt. Heather Slyve pulled out her service weapon and fire three shots, hitting him in the face, leg, and chest, according to the report.

A TSA agent was also struck in the arm while fleeing, but the wound wasn’t considered life-threatening. White, on the other hand, was taken to the hospital.

Authorities are still investigating why White came to the airport. He lieves about 2 miles away and it didn’t look like he had a flight to catch.

White, a former member of the Army, is a deeply devout Jehovah’s Witness, according to a person who knows him. He rejected Western medicine in favor of alternative remedies.

No motive was immediately available, with the sheriff’s office merely saying that they found his car outside of the terminal and checked it. He has been arrested before for minor charges.

The chaos at the airport featured lots of screaming and sirens, with orders from the airport for passengers to evacuate.
