Woman accused of attempting theft of fetus by cutting it from pregnant woman’s womb

A pregnant 26-year-old Colorado woman who was lured to the home of 34-year-old Dynel Lane under the pretext of baby clothes for sale was attacked and her fetus cut from her belly, then left bleeding in the basement of Lane’s home as Lane was rushed to the hospital by her husband, who thought she had just had a miscarriage. Lane had told her family that she was expecting, and had arranged to meet her husband at the doctor’s office for a pre-natal appointment on Wednesday.

The woman, who had been nearly eight months pregnant, managed to call 911. Police arrived after the Lanes left for the hospital. In the 911 recording the woman is heard pleading for help, saying she has been stabbed.  “She cut me,” she say. “I’m pregnant. Please help me.” When police arrived they found several bloody towels in the washing machine.

Lane’s husband said he came home from work to meet his wife and found her covered in blood. She told him she had suffered a miscarriage, and that the baby was in the bathtub upstairs. The husband said that he turned the baby over and rubbed it slightly. He heard it gasp for breath, then rushed both the baby and his wife to the hospital, unaware that the baby’s mother was bleeding in the basement..

Lane has been arrested on suspicion of first-degree assault, attempted first-degree murder and child abuse that knowingly and recklessly resulted in death. She appeared briefly in court on Thursday. Colorado law states that she could only face murder charges if the baby actually lived outside the mother’s womb, a controversial issue in the state. District Attorney Stan Garnett says that he will wait for the baby’s autopsy results before deciding what charges to file.

Meanwhile, the baby’s mother was alert and able to answer questions on Thursday. Garnett says she was doing better than expected. She was able to tell police that she did not know Lane, and only went to her house in response to a Craigslist ad.

A doctor observed that the incision on the woman’s abdomen was “well performed.” Lane is a former nurse’s aide whose license expired in 2012. She refused a vaginal exam at the hospital, and police obtained a warrant to search her body. Results of that search have not been released. One of Lane’s teenage daughters told investigators that she could not tell her mother was pregnant.

Lane is in jail, where a judge has ordered her to stay on a $2 million bond. Boulder County Assistant District Attorney Ryan Brackley called the crime premeditated and “extremely violent.”
