Ferguson police shooting suspect: the arresting cops beat me

The defense attorney for Jeffrey L. Williams claimed that police left bruises all over his body after he allegedly shot two officers during protests of the death of Michael Brown, but police have denied those claims.

A man who has accused St. Louis County police of excessive force in his arrest for allegedly shooting two Ferguson police officers was back in court Tuesday.

Defense lawyer Jerryl Christmas asked to use a photograph of 20-year-old Jeffrey L. Williams in court, which the circuit court judge agreed to, and prosecutors took their own photos during the hearing, according to a Chicago Tribune report.

Christmas is claiming that police beat up Williams, and there were bruises all over his body, which police have denied. Police spokesman Brian Schellman said that a nurse examined him after being booked, and Williams did not resist arrest, according to the report.

Christmas further asserted that police coerced a confession out of Williams, who said he wasn’t trying to shoot police officers, and police are denying that claim as well, saying they have the statement on videotape.

After being photographed, Williams was taken back to jail.

The mug shot that was released on Sunday features some visible injuries, Christmas claimed, with red marks appearing on the throat and cheek of Williams.

Police say Williams shot two officers last week outside of a police station in Ferguson where protests have become the norm ever since the infamous shooting of 18-year-old Michael Brown last summer.

Williams has been charged with felony assault, armed criminal action, and a weapons charge.

Christmas denied suggestions that it was an “ambush shooting,” arguing that the officers were shot accidentally, and then later he claimed that Williams didn’t even fire the shots.

The shooting happened at the tail end of the protests as people started to disperse. The protest was prompted by the resignation of Police Chief Tom Jackson after a Justice Department report alleged extensive racial bias in the city’s offices.
