Seven people were shot in an apparent drive outside of a small grocery store in Stockton, Calif. Tuesday night. Three people died and the four others were wounded.
Police said that the shooting happened around 8:20 p.m. at Madison Market. Stockton police spokesman Joseph Silva said that victims were found inside and outside of the store, according to the Daily News.
When police arrived on the scene just around 8:30 p.m., a 27-year-old woman was pronounced dead as stated by police in a release early Wednesday. She was found outside of the store on the sidewalk.
A 24-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman passed away at the hospital. Police also said that the other four victims–four males between the ages of 24 and 34–were taken to nearby hospitals to be treated. The men were found inside of the store. They are expected to survive.
Dozens of people were gathered at the scene after the shooting occurred, according to Associated Press. Extra officers had to be called in for back up just to control the crowd.
Police did not immediately release the victims’ identities or any details on their injuries. And there has not been any information released regarding if the victims were connected.
Silva stated that the area was known for gang and drug activity. He said they are “looking into those motivations.” Stockton police added that the “preliminary investigation” pointed to a drive-by shooting as the cause of the incident and that it may have “some type of gang component,” according to NBC News.
Investigators are conversing with witnesses. Police are still searching for a suspect and no arrests have been made as of early Wednesday. Police are asking that anyone who has information should call Crime Stoppers at 209-946-0600.
