Her mother died in the crash, but rescuers found her 14 hours later clinging to life upside down in the vehicle.
A dramatic new video from body-camera footage strapped to an emergency worker shows the rescue of an 18-month-old Utah girl from a car that had ended up in a river many hours before.
The video shows emergency responders coming upon the deceased body of 25-year-old Lynn Groesbeck in the front seat with her child, Lily Groesback, in the back, and one responder can be heard screaming that there is a baby in the vehicle, according to an Associated Press report.
The rescuer attempts to reassure the girl, telling her “we’re helping, we’re coming” as a firefighter pulls out her limp body that had been strapped into the car seat upside down for 14 hours.
The rescuers determined that she was hypothermic and carried her to an embankment as they attempted to revive her, saying “come on, sweetie” during the delicate ordeal.
The girl ended up at the hospital six minutes after being pulled from the car and finally started to show that she was alive by vomiting and starting to breathe again.
The car had been spotted March 7 by a fisherman. It had struck a cement barrier on a bridge and crashed into the river in Spanish Fork, which is about 50 miles south of Salt Lake City. No one saw the wreck because the cement barrier kept passersby from seeing it.
The girl was listed in critical condition but was later released from the hospital. Police are investigating the crash, but believe the mother may have been sleepy or distracted.
The Spanish Fork is formed by the combination of Soldier Creek and Thistle Creek in the Wasatch Range, and it flows about 20 miles into Utah Lake to the northwest. It is located entirely in Utah County.
