Utah to allow the firing squad? Legislation heads to governor’s desk

Utah will become the only state in the union to allow the firing squad for executions if the governor signs the measure, which allows for the method if lethal drugs aren't available.

Utah is set to become the only state in the country to allow firing squads to execute condemned prisoners, as lawmakers passed a bill that now awaits the governor’s signature.

The bill, passed by the state Senate on Tuesday, would allow for firing squads if there is a shortage of execution drugs, something that has plagued the entire nation, according to an Associated Press report.

The move is drawing condemnation from civil liberties groups, who slammed the proposal as “barbaric” and a holdover from the Wild West days. The bill’s supporters say that firing squads are much more humane than botched lethal injections, and the measure is simply in place until the lethal injection problems are worked out.

Utah Gov. Gary Herbert hasn’t said whether he’ll sign off on the measure, although his spokesman did say in a statement that the method would provide the state with a legitimate backup method.

The Utah American Civil Liberties Union said there is still a possibility that Herbert, a Republican, doesn’t sign the bill. The ACLU believes such legislation makes Utah appear “backwards and backwoods,” ACLU representative Anna Brower said according to the report.

The bill squeaked through the House on a narrow vote, but it sailed through the Senate on an 18-10 vote.

The state had abandoned firing squads about a decade ago.

Utah isn’t the only state struggling with the lethal injection issue. A botched Oklahoma lethal injection last year as well as one in Arizona has caused states to seek alternatives in the face of nationwide shortage of the proper lethal injection drugs.

Legislation has been introduced in Arkansas to allow firing squads. It was proposed in Wyoming as well, although that measure never went anywhere.
