Man attempts to grab toddler in Washington; teenagers chase him down

No one knows the identity of the man, who tried to snatch the toddler as the boy's two young siblings chased after him and were soon joined by two teenagers.

A man who was caught on camera attempting to flee after picking up a toddler in Washington state abandoned the child after the boy’s two young siblings screamed and chased after him, authorities say.

Police don’t think the man was from the small town of Sprague in the failed kidnapping attempt, which fortunately resulted in the 22-month-old being unharmed, according to an Associated Press report.

Lincoln County Sheriff Wade Magers said that he didn’t think he was local or police would have recognized him, but there are currently no leads on who the man is. Just 500 people live in the tiny town, which is about 40 miles southwest of Spokane.

Police say that Wright left his three children — 10-year-old Brenden, 8-year-old Delicia, and the toddler — with a babysitter on Sunday so he could go to work, and they were playing in a city park near the sitter’s house when a man came and talked to the children. They were not supervised at the time.

Suddenly, he scooped the toddler out of the stroller and started running, which surveillance video captured as Delicia and Brenden chased him.

Nearby, Dorothy Giddings heard screams while working in her antique store and saw a man running across the street with a baby in his arms and a little girl behind him screaming saying, “that man got my baby brother,” according to the report. Giddings sent her 15-year-old grandson and his 16-year-old friend to chase down the man. The kidnapper saw them and put down the child in a vacant lot before taking off running again, disappearing after rounding a corner.

No one saw the vehicle that the kidnapper drove. He is believe to be about 30 years old and about 6 feet tall to 6 feet 2 inches. He had a thin build with brown hair and a mustache, according to the report.
