In the wake of a scandal surrounding Hillary Clinton over her personal email use, South Carolina Sen. Lindsey Graham has admitted that he does not have a personal email address and has never sent an email.
Graham revealed this tidbit about his relationship to technology while speaking via video to NBC’s “Meet the Press” host Chuck Todd about Clinton’s use of her private email account to conduct government business. “What I want – was any other Cabinet member, during the time that she served, did they have a private email account?” Graham stated.
On being asked whether he himself has a private email address, Graham replied, “I don’t email. No, you can have every email I’ve ever sent. I’ve never sent one.” Todd laughed in some surprise and Graham joined in, saying, “I don’t know what that makes me,” before returning to the topic of the investigation into Clinton’s email practices.
The senator, who will turn 60 this year, is not alone in avoiding email. According to a 2012 Pew survey, 31 percent of Americans aged 50-64 have never used email, and only 46 percent of those who do check their email on a daily basis. In contrast, only 12 percent of 18-29 year old Americans have never used email.
Although a fairly large percent of members of Graham’s generation do not rely on email to communicate, some have wondered if Graham’s lack of use of the technology will hurt his chances for a 2016 presidential bid. Graham has served as a senator for South Carolina since 2003.
