Outrage boils over in Wisconsin after police shooting of unarmed black man

Protests are planned in the state capitol after a police officer gunned down the 19-year-old, who had allegedly been attacking other people at a residence.

A fresh set of protests are expected in the killing of an unarmed black man in Wisconsin that has the community riled up.

The latest shooting involves 19-year-old Tony Robinson, who was killed in Madison by a police officer who was responding to a domestic disturbance call, and the confrontation has resulted in protests that are expected to reach the Wisconsin State Capitol this morning, according to a CNN report.

In addition, students at East High School plan to stage a walkout after classes.

The incident began with a call of a black man yelling and jumping in front of cars — a man who was later identified as Robinson, according to the report.

Madison Police Chief Mike Koval said that Robinson, who was identified shortly after the 911 call, had apparently attacked on of his friends, although the dispatcher dealing with the call added that no weapon had been spotted.

Four minutes after the initial 911 call, the dispatcher reportedly said that Robinson had tried to strangle another patron at the same address. Just 30 seconds after that, the dispatcher indicated that shots had been fired.

Officer Matt Kenny was identified as the shooter. He had been involved in a fatal shooting back in 2007, which police described as a “suicide by cop” incident.

Kenny allegedly heard commotion inside when he arrived and forced his way in, which is when Robinson apparently got into a confrontation with the officer, according to their report.

As a result, Kenny drew his gun and shot Robinson, police said.

Koval said he understood why protesters were angry due to the fact that Robinson was armed, but he urged for calm as investigators sort out what happened.

Koval said that Kenny had been struck in the head during the confrontation. He is currently on paid administrative leave, as is customary with investigations such as this.

Robinson has had trouble with the law before, pleading guilty in December to an army robbery that happened the previous April. However, his mother Andrew Irwin said that her son “has never been a violent person, never,” according to the report. Koval declined to comment on Robinson’s history, calling it “inappropriate.”
