More than 50 passengers injured in truck-train collision in North Carolina

An Amtrak train derailed after hitting a truck in Hailfax, N.C. Monday. More than 50 passengers were injured.

Amtrak’s Carolinian collided with a tractor-trailer carrying an oversize load around 12:15 p.m. The Charlotte Observer reported that the tractor-trailer was being escorted by North Carolina State Highway Patrol when it was struck by the train. The driver was attempting to make a difficult left turn, according to Associated Press.

Lt. Jeff Gordon, a spokesman for North Carolina State Highway Patrol, said that 62 people were taken to Hailfax Regional Medical Center to be treated for injuries that were not considered life threatening or fatal. One person was said to have had more serious injuries, but details were not immediately released, according to AP.

Gordon also said that the truck driver was not injured, but the train’s engineer was included in the 62 people who were taken to the hospital. In total, the Amtrak train was carrying 212 passengers and eight crew members.

The tractor-trailer had a modular building wrapped in blue plastic that contained electrical equipment on board, according to Gordon. It was headed to New Jersey, and North Carolina State Highway Patrol was guiding it to the Virgina state line. A trooper was trying to help the driver make a difficult left turn over the tracks and onto a highway, but the 164-foot tractor-trailer could not handle the turn.

The trooper and the driver were attempting to get the vehicle off of the tracks, and there was no sign of a train coming. However, warning flashes went off and crossing arms came down when the train appeared. Both were activated, but the crossing arms came down on the truck. The truck was straddling the tracks when it was hit.

A Carolinian passenger Patrick Narmi, 21, said that the train “ran right through it.” He said that the impact was similar to an automobile accident and that he was thrown head first into another seat before ending up on the ground.

Eyewitness Leslie Cipriani, who was watching from a stop sign nearby, said that she saw the crossing arms come down on the truck. She also saw the driver jump from the truck when “he knew he couldn’t beat it.”

This crash was the third serious train crash in the last two months. Two crashes in California and New York resulted in the deaths of seven people and 30 injuries combined.
