This young star’s a long way from McKinley High – light years away, in fact.
The first images of former Glee star Melissa Benoist are lighting up the Internet – Benoist is playing the titular character in the new CBS pilot for Supergirl.
Benoist and company begin shooting the pilot this week, in which she plays Kara Danvers, also known as Kara Zor-El, who narrowly escapes Krypton’s annihilation to join her famous cousin Superman on Earth.
Supergirl’s iconic duds were designed by Colleen Atwood, a three-time Academy Award winner, who also created the costumes for executive producer Greg Berlanti’s other other DC Comics television adaptations The Flash and Arrow.
“In designing Supergirl, I wanted to embrace the past, but more importantly, thrust her into the street-style action hero of today,” Atwood said of the costume.
If Supergirl is greenlighted at CBS, it would be the first network superhero series with a female lead in over 10 years.
CBS chairwoman Nina Tassler described the network’s version of Supergirl as “a very strong, independent young woman.”
“We’re big feminists,” said Tassler. “It’s her intellect, it’s her skill, it’s her smarts. It’s all of those elements.”
The highly anticipated series also features Mehcad Brooks as Jimmy Olsen, Laura Benanti as Alura Zor-El, Calista Flockhart as Cat Grant, Chyler Leigh as Alexandra “Alex” Danvers, and Jeremy Jordan as Winslow “Winn” Schott. Dean Cain will also make an appearance in a yet-to-be-revealed role.
Benoist herself seems completely bowled over by her new role, tweeting a picture of herself in Supergirl’s outfit with the comment, “THIS. I still can’t believe I am wearing the House of El coat of arms. #supergirl #wbdctv.”
