A third of the four siblings found unconscious in their grandmother’s home in Troy, Ohio on Friday has died in the hospital this week on Sunday. Her death came just hours before community members were due to gather for a candlelight vigil in her and her brother and sisters’ honor. Dionanna Bishop, 14, and Dejah Bishop, 13, were among the four unconscious children found in the home, and they were pronounced dead at the scene. Jakia Jones and Jahari Ward were still clinging to life when they were found, and were rushed to the hospital. This Sunday, Jakia Jones lost her battle with the lethal dose of carbon monoxide.
Jones’ brother, Jarhari Ward, 8, is still in critical condition in the hospital, according to Lean Bishop, Jr., Ward’s uncle. At the candlelight vigil held just after Jones’ death, Lean Bishop incited hope and positivity for Ward. He said, “He’s fighting. He’s showing signs from stimulus, from us touching him and praying with him…we need prayers to help him fight for his life.”
Jones and the Bishop sisters all attended Troy Junior High, and Ward attends Heywood Elementary. There will be grief counselors on campus for distressed students. The candlelight vigil packed the community center, not far from the children’s grandmother’s house where they were all found.
The carbon monoxide poison is suspected to have originated from a faulty furnace. There seems to have been no carbon monoxide detectors installed in the home. Investigators will be reviewing the case in its entirety to determine if charges should be pressed. Lean Bishop hopes this tragedy will bring preventative awareness to the public so something like this won’t happen again. He stresses the importance of having carbon monoxide detectors installed at home.
