Madonna took to the stage during London’s Brit Awards on Tuesday night to perform her new single Living For Love, but life imitated art as the music icon fell down a staircase soon after singing the lyric “watch me stumble.” The frightening incident occurred after a dancer attempted to pull of her cape, which was reported tied too tightly.

During her show-closing live performance at the 35th Annual BRIT Awards, the 56-year-old singer was wearing a cape which was meant to be removed by one of the dancers once it was unfastened, revealing a costume underneath. Madonna struggled to remove the lacing around her neck, and one of the dancers pulled on the cape while it was still attached, yanking her backwards. She then tumbled down an entire staircase on the stage.

Media reports claim that the audience at the O2 auditorium released gasps of shock upon Madonna’s collapse, though some presumed the fall was supposed to be part of the show. However, when she dropped her microphone and could no longer be heard singing, the entire arena began to panic until Madonna recovered, picked up her microphone, and finished her performance without any further issues.

Social media exploded following the Material Girl’s fall, as photos and videos were posted all over Twitter alongside the hashtags “#CapeFear,” “#CapeGate” and “#FallenMadonna.”

Despite her issues with the cape, Madonna took to Instagram on Wednesday to thank Armani for providing it for her performance, and made sure to blame the incident on the cape being tied too tightly.

“Armani hooked me up! My beautiful cape was tied too tight! But nothing can stop me and love really lifted me up,” she captioned a picture of her stunning performance outfit. “Thanks for your good wishes! I’m fine!”
