Kyle Dube, 21, is accused of creating a fake Facebook profile and wearing a ski mask to kidnap a teenage girl in order to appear the hero when he found her, but the victim died of asphyxiation.
The trial for a 21-year-old Maine man accused of setting up a botched kidnapping that resulted in the death of a teenage girl begins today with opening statements.
Kyle Dube allegedly created a fake Facebook profile, donned a ski mask, and attempted to make himself a hero by trying to make it look like he was rescuing 15-year-old Nichole Cable from a kidnapping attempt, according to a Fox News report.
Instead, Dube wound up killing her in the act of the kidnap attempt in May 2013 after setting up a meeting with her, police say.
Defense attorneys have put forward Dube’s former girlfriend as an alternative suspect, arguing that she disliked Cable out of jealousy, but Superior Court Justice Ann Murray did not allow that on the request of the state, arguing that the defense have failed to make any connection between the girl and the victim’s death.
Dube allegedly planned to abduct Nichole wearing a ski mask and then return without it to find her and claim credit for being a hero. However, Cable died of asphysxiation, and her remains were found eight days later.
Although the Facebook profile was created in another young man’s name, it was traced to Dube’s home.
The killing prompted friends and classmates of Nichole Cable at her high school to plan to reduce or end use of social media, shaken by the tragedy, according to the report.
The school district continues to advocate that students use social media safely and responsibly, although the superintendent said he hadn’t seen any change in the way students use social media there. He wants them to at least recognize that there are dangers on the Internet.
