Minneapolis police officer shot, was apparently targeted: report

Police have since arrested a man in connection with the burglary call the officer was responding to, but they aren't sure if there is any connection to that and the shooting of the officer, who is currently in fair condition.

A Minneapolis police officer is reportedly in fair condition after being shot sitting in his patrol car, and authorities believe he was intentionally targeted.

Police Chief Janee Harteau said that there is “little doubt that an officer was the intended target” of the Saturday morning shooting, according to a CNN report.

The officer, who was not named, was responding to a burglary along with another officer when he was shot at about 5 a.m. local time, and his partner drove him to the hospital.

Assistant Police Chief Matt Clark said that the officer was standing outside his car at the time. He is currently “doing well” and is listed in fair condition, he said according to the report.

Police arrested 43-year-old Andrew Neal in connection with the burglary and a domestic assault. Authorities aren’t yet sure if there is any connection between the report the officers were responding to and the shooting.

The woman who reported the assault is talking to police, and she has given “a lot of information” to the police, Clark said.

Authorities don’t think the officer was targeted personally, but merely targeted due to the fact that he was a police officer, according to a police spokesman.

Tension between the police and the community has grown ever since a recent spate of killings of unarmed black individuals caused protests across the nation, although there is not yet any indication that is the case here.

In December, a 28-year-old man killed two New York City Police Department officers ostensibly in revenge for those killings, even though those officers had nothing to do with any of the incidents. The man later killed himself.
