Indianapolis police shoot man allegedly trying to kill his mother in their home

Indianapolis police shot and killed a man Saturday afternoon who was allegedly trying to kill his mother. Kent Norman, 51, was shot after he refused to put down a weapon and threatened officers.

A 911 call came in around 4:00 p.m. Saturday. No one spoke to the dispatch operators, but they could hear a disturbance, with a lot of yelling and threats heard in the background.

Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department officers responding to the east side home got no response to their knocks. They kicked in the door and found Norman armed with a knife, which they repeatedly asked him to drop. Two other people were in the home. Norman did not put the weapon down, instead coming toward the officers, who shot him when they believed they were in danger. Norman was pronounced dead on the scene.

Neighbors said that a husband and wife in their 70s had lived in the home with their adult son for nearly 30 years. Just a few hours before the shooting the son was seen shoveling snow outside the house. They said it is typically a quiet neighborhood.

Clint Harris was outside with his dog when police came around a corner with guns drawn. They told him to go back inside. He saw them knocking on the suspect’s door and then, a few minutes later, saw them kick it in.

Yvonne Small said she was shocked by the incident, saying nothing ever happens in the neighborhood except a dog barking once in awhile.

The officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave for a standard investigation. Neither the two residents in the home and the police officers were injured. The officers have not been identified.
