Minneapolis police officer shot, chief says he was ‘targeted’

Minneapolis police officer Jordan Davis was shot early Saturday morning at the conclusion of a burglary call. He and his partner were standing outside their patrol car when Davis was shot. Minneapolis Police Chief Janee Harteau says she believes the officer was targeted. In a statement Harteau said that there is very little doubt that a police officer was the intended target, and that Davis happened to be the one who was there. Davis’ partner drove him to the hospital, where he is reported to be in satisfactory condition.

Andrew Neal, 43, was arrested shortly after the shooting occurred on suspicion of burglary, violating his probation and probable aggravated domestic assault. Assistant police chief Matt Clark said that authorities are certain the domestic violence call and the shooting are related.

Davis and his partner had just handled a domestic assault and burglary call at around 5 a.m. A tenant in the apartment building where the shooting occurred called 911 after she said her kitchen window was smashed in with a hammer by Neal, who she knows. A friend was able to chase him away with a pocketknife and the woman immediately called police. Davis was shot outside the apartment after taking her statement.

Neal has previously served prison time for first-degree assault. He has an extensive arrest record.

Harteau said that this is a reminder to everyone that all police officers face danger simply because they have chosen to wear a uniform. Police union chief John Delmonico said that this is an example of what can happen fast in a police officer’s job. In this instance they believe that “law enforcement was the target” rather than a specific cop. Mayor Betsy Hodges said the shooting was “a cowardly act.”
