Two New Jersey children died in a four-alarm house fire on Friday night. Seven other occupants of the home escaped, including two children who jumped from a third-floor window. The bodies of the children who were killed, 6-year-old Jayda McEachin and her 1-year-old brother Zion Tony, were found on the third floor.
Those who escaped the home, which was outside Newark, said that by the time they realized it was on fire they had little time to act. Mary Lewter, a cousin of the two children who died, lived on the ground floor, and said that by the time she was awakened she could not get upstairs to help because of flames and smoke. She said her baby’s father woke her and said to grab their baby and get out. Firefighters kept her from re-entering the building once she was outside.
Neighbor Darryl Mayfield said they saw smoke and came down and saw children upstairs, waving for help. He said a lady was there with the kids and the neighbors kept telling her to throw the children down and they would catch them, but she was afraid. Finally the kids jumped. Mayfield said he caught them and then the woman went back in.
The children’s mother escaped the fire and was reportedly “distraught.” One person was hospitalized with burns.
Orange Mayor Dwayne Warren said that the cold weather caused frozen pipes, which hampered efforts to contain the fire. Temperatures were around 10 degrees. A bus was brought in by New Jersey Transit to use as a warming center at the site of the fire.
Four families have been displaced by the fire, which was still burning after two hours. The Red Cross is providing temporary shelter, clothing and food. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
