Florida police dog fired after getting it wrong, biting doughnut shop worker instead of doughnut

Four-year-old Renzo has been fired from the Coconut Creek police force after biting a doughnut shop worker last week. The Belgian Malinois also bit an officer last November while tracking a suspect. The black K9 officer has been with the police department for over a year.

The most recent incident occurred in a Dunkin’ Donuts parking lot on Feb. 11. Police say that Renzo went to the shop wth his handler, Officer Carl DiBlasi, to meet Sgt. Brandi Delvecchio. Renzo wa in DiBlasi’s patrol car and Delvecchio started to pet him. The dog lunged at her. DiBlasi warned her to back away, struggling to restrain the dog, which was already halfway out the car window. DiBlasi lost his grip on Renzo’s harness and the dog jumped out of the vehicle.

DiBlasi shouted Renzo’s name and yelled “fuey!” which is an obedience command that indicates incorrect behavior. The dog started after another officer, then turned and ran at a doughnut shop employee who was reaching into his car to get his apron. Robert Doherty, 37, heard the shouting and jumped into his car, but was unable to get his leg in fast enough and was bitten. The police report said that DiBlasi had to “pry” the dog from Doherty’s leg. He suffered four bites to his right shin and calf.

In the previous incident, which occurred Nov. 26, Renzo bit Officer Michael Giuttari who was tracking a home invasion suspect with Renzo and DiBlasi. When DiBlasi tripped and lost control of the dog, he spun around and bit Giuttary. DiBlasi said that Renzo must have considered the other officer a threat. Giuttari suffered “multiple puncture wounds.”

Renzo is being removed from the force. Coconut Creek Police Chief Michael J. Mann said that he has made the decision to retire the dog, who will go to live with his former handler, DiBlasi.
