With more than eight feet of snow over the past three weeks, some Boston-area residents are coming up with plentyt of winter hijinx to pass the time, as they make the most out of record-setting snowfalls. Snowmobilers are racing through city streets. Enormous snow piles are being used for skiing and sledding. People are jumping out of windows into snowbanks.
One Cambridge resident, John Goodman, says he has been going stir-crazy from being in the house so much, so he really cannot blame people for doing stupid stuff. Boston police spokesman Michael McCarthy is urging people not to do foolish things. Mayor Marty Walsh has been begging residents to stop jumping out of their windows into snow, which is piled up 10 feet or more in some places. Walsh said “it’s a foolish thing to do and you could kill yourself.”
Boston police are reminding people that snowmobiles, as well as other off-road vehicles, are not allowed on city streets. One online video showed a snowmobiler towing a snowboarder.
A snow mountain near the Massachusetts Institute of Technology towers three stories high and has attracted people skiing and sledding and even mountain climbing. “Mount Cambridge,” also known as “The Alps of MIT,” now has a chain-link fence around it and “No Trespassing” signs, but visitors are not being deterred.
Two residents dug out a bar in a huge pile of snow in front of their house and hosted a party for their neighbors. They plan to add seating.
Naturally that much snow prompts igloo-building, but some entrepreneurial residents are going to far as to offer them for rent. One snow cave comes with wireless Internet access, candlelight, and a ventilation chimney, all for only $10 a night.
Abominable snowmen have been spotted hailing cabs and bar tending in local establishments. One costumed Yeti has become a sensation on Twitter. @BostonYeti2015 now has over 8,000 followers.
