At approximately 5:30 Wednesday morning 24-year-old Riley Mecham shot his grandmother’s 64-year-old boyfriend Anthony “Holden” Sorenson at the Orem home they shared, then went downstairs and shot himself, according to police. Orem Police Department Lt. Craig Martinez said that police had been to the home before, and were aware that the shooter and the victim “really didn’t like each other.”
Family friend Bill Spalding said that Mecham was upset over losing his girlfriend. He said that he found out suddenly that she had a new boyfriend and snapped. He said Mecham spoke to his girlfriend at about midnight and was upset. His mother went in to calm him down and thought everything was okay when he went to sleep. Spalding said that hours later Mecham got out of bed, shot Sorenson, then went downstairs and told his mother to lock herself in his room because he was going to kill himself.
Mecham used a shotgun to shoot Sorenson. Police say an AR-15 that was also recovered at the scene was used by Mecham to shoot himself.
Mecham lived with his grandmother, who was the owner of the home, Sorenson and his mother. All four people were reportedly in the house at the time of the killings.
Paul Starkey, a neighbor who lived next door, said he never heard of the family having any problems. He would go over and have coffee with the older man and talk about life outdoors.
A police investigation is ongoing, but officers say they are not searching for any other suspects. Martinez said that they have no motive other than the fact that Mecham and Sorenson did not like each other. He said that the preliminary investigation did not show that there was any drug or alcohol involvement.
