Police said Wednesday that the Michigan woman who accidentally shot herself last month was adjusting and attempting to secure a hand gun in her bra holster. The mishap led to her death.
Mark Clapp, director of the St. Joseph Public Safety Department, released details surrounding the events of Jan. 1 to the Kalamazoo Gazette on Wednesday, but the department is still awaiting a full autopsy report.
Clapp explained that Bond was struggling to adjust her bra holster to make it fit the way she desired. As she was looking down making adjustments, she accidentally “discharged the weapon.”
The 55-year-old mother Christina Bond fatally struck her eye with her .22 caliber revolver in her St. Joseph home, which is on the eastern shore of Lake Michigan, on New Years Day. Bond was airlifted to Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, but she was pronounced dead the following day.
Bond was an administrator and member of the Road to Life Church for 15 years, according to her obituary in The Herald-Palladium last month. She also served two tours in the United States Navy and ministered to inmates at the Berrien County jail. The newspaper also reported that Bond had recently been elected a precinct delegate for St. Joseph Charter Township. In addition, she was a body-builder who won the Miss Michigan Figure Overall Championship in 2013. She left behind two sons.
Bra holsters are not rare. Several gun accessories have been designed for women, and many businesses cater specifically to female gun owners.
Well Armed Woman store owner, Carrie Lightfoot, told USA Today last year that bra holsters were increasing in popularity. She said that the bra is a “natural location” for a holster depending on the size of the gun. She added that women are often switching their attire–from dresses to exercise clothing–so they “need options.”
