The FBI is investigating whether hate crime laws were violated in the attack, and if so, he could face federal charges, according to police.
A Michigan man accused of stabbing two people at a bus stop apparently asked them beforehand if they were Muslims, police are saying.
Terrence Lavaron Thomas, 39, allegedly stabbed two Detroit men in their early 50s — stabbing the first man five times and then stabbing the second when he tried to intervene, according to a Detroit Free Press report.
The first man was stabbed in the face, the neck, and three times in the back, and the man who tried to intervene was stabbed in the hand, according to Southfield Police Chief Eric Hawkins as reported by the Free Press.
Police arrested Thomas minutes later just a few blocks from the scene, where they found him carrying two knives and marijuana, authorities said. He also reportedly told police he was a Muslim.
Thomas seemed incoherent and “there’s a question about his stability,” Hawkins said. He was arraigned on two count sof assault with intent to murder, a count of carrying a dangerous weapon with unlawful intent, and possession of drugs. He has a bond set at $1 million with a March 4 preliminary examination scheduled.
The FBI is investigating the incident to see if hate-crime laws were violated, police said.
The men told Thomas that they were not Muslims, which started an argument between them before the stabbing, police said. They don’t believe Thomas was acting with anyone else, nor do they believe he knew either of the two men beforehand, who have since been released from the hospital.
If the FBI finds the hate-crime laws come into play, he could face federal charges.
