Joe Biden has a bad day: handles new defense secretary’s wife and talks about Somali cabbies

Shown in widely publicized pictures, Biden got up close with Defense Secretary Ash Carter's wife.

It was a big day for Joe Biden, who managed to subject himself to two new gaffes in one day, as he got a little too close to new Defense Secretary Ash Carter’s wife, Stephanie, and talked a little too much about Somali cab drivers, many of whom he has “great relationships with.” Not surprisingly, today’s events were captured by social media and spread like wildfire with headings such as “Veep Creep.”

The first of the events occurred during the swearing in of Ash Carter, the new U.S. defense secretary. The swearing in went fine, but once Carter started to talk, Biden beckoned to Carter’s wife, Stephanie. For about 20 seconds, Biden, who was standing behind Mrs. Carter, had both hands on her shoulders and was whispering in her ear. It looked a little odd.

The big question is, of course, what the vice president was telling Carter’s wife. Within seconds Carter reached back and put his own hand on Stephanie’s shoulder, thanking his “perfect wife Stephanie” for her support. Biden said at the ceremony that he has known for Ash Carter for years, and when the full video of the “hands-on-shoulders” incident is viewed it does not appear that Stephanie Carter is uncomfortable. She is seen nodding in agreement to whatever Biden is saying. The damage was done though: the whisper seen round the world.

Then there were the comments about cab drivers, which occurred during an anti-extremism summit at the White House. Biden talked about the “very identifiable” Somali community living in Wilmington, Delaware, his home town. He said that people coming to the train station will notice that he has “great relations with them, because an awful lot of them are driving cabs, and are friends of mine.” The religious and community leaders in the audience chuckled uncomfortably, reminded of the 2006 gaffe when then-Sen. Biden told an Indian-American supporter about needing to have a slight Indian accent in order to go into a Dunkin’ Donuts of 7-Eleven in Delaware.
