Blast of arctic air brings record-setting temperatures to Detroit, Flint

The temperature dipped to 9 degrees below zero in the Motor City, tying a record that was set all the way back in 1904.

Arctic winds swept through Michigan on Monday, driving down temperatures so low that it tied a record that is more than a century old.

The blast of cold air caused temperatures to plunge to 9 degrees below zero, tying a record that was set in 1904, according to the National Weather Service as reported by the Detroit Free Press. Meanwhile, Port Huron dropped to a bone-chilling 26 below.

By Monday afternoon, Detroit was already at a mere 7 degrees — a colder temperature than frigid Fairbanks, Alaska, which was 16 degrees at the time, according to the NWS.

The Free Press report noted that it was so cold that it caused equipment failure at Batch Brewing in Detroit, killing the glycol chiller necessary for making beer, and it is likely to stay closed until Thursday.

Things are supposed to get a little warmer later on in the week, reaching 25 degrees on Saturday, but it will be a very cold week for Detroiters.

The cold could pose a significant danger to children and elderly people, who are at the most risk for hypothermia, so authorities are recommending that they stay inside and keep warm, and if they do need to go out, to bundle up heavily.

Drivers should keep cell phones, blankets, and some food and water on them, as well as at least half a tank of gasoline to avoid getting stranded in the first place.

Homeless people will need to find a warming shelter to protect themselves from the frigid temperatures. It is not uncommon for homeless people to suffer from frostbite during these cold snaps.

Although Detroit only tied the record, the city of Flint to the north shattered its 1963 record of -13 with a low of -21 on Monday.
