Shooting at MIssissippi Walmart leaves one dead, police officer wounded

Authorities say he was shot to death after exchanging gunfire with police, grazing an officer, who treated and released from the hospital.

A manĀ is dead and a police officer suffered wounds in a shooting at a Mississippi Walmart on Sunday.

Details have been scarce, but authoriteis have confirmed that Howard Brent Means Jr., 45, of Tishomingo was shot to death after getting in a gunfight with police in the town of Iuka at around 6 p.m., according to the Mississippi Bureau of Investigations as reported by local TV station WTVA.

A police officer, Joseph Marlar, was grazed by a bullet during the shooting, and he was taken to the hospital for treatment. The officer has since been released.

Authorities have sent a crime scene unit to the shooting location to collect evidence, and an autopsy will be performed on Means in Jackson.

Iuka is a small town of just a few thousand that serves as the county seat of Tishomingo County, which lies on the very northeastern edge of Mississippi.

A report by the Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal indicated that Means was shot and killed when he ran into the store and shot at police officers.
