A teenage boy in Corbin, Kentucky, is suspected of killing three family members, then leading police officers on a high speed chase that ended on Saturday when he was killed in a shootout. Kevin and Sarah Hendrix, along with the daughter Grace, were found dead at their home in Corbin on Saturday afternoon of an apparent triple homicide. Authorities think they may have been dead since Wednesday. Their son, 16-year-old Jason, was killed near Baltimore after a high speed chase and shootout on Saturday morning.

The chase began when Maryland State Police tried to stop a speeding Honda Pilot SUV on southbound Interstate 90, near the Maryland House Travel Plaza. During the pursuit the vehicle at one point crossed to the northbound lanes, eventually heading east on the Beltway inner loop. Witnesses reported seeing the Honda weaving in and out of traffic and moving at high speed, with well over a dozen police vehicles in pursuit.

The Honda eventually crashed into another car in a traffic roundabout.When police approached the SUV the driver, armed with a handgun and other weapons, opened fire. One police officer was killed. Six other officers returned fire and killed the driver, identified as Jason Hendrix.

The SUV had Kentucky plates, and on Saturday afternoon police asked authorities in Corbin to check the address where the car was registered. The three bodies were found at that time. Neighbors reported that the Hendrix family had not been seen since Tuesday, and Jason had not been at school since then.

Sarah Hendrix was a professor at Union College in Barbourville. Kevin Hendrix worked in the Whitley County Circuit Clerk office. Jason Hendrix was a member of Corbin High School’s Junior ROTC program. A third Hendrix child attends college in Georgia.

The police officer who was wounded in the shootout was wearing a ballistic vest and is in fair condition. The investigation is ongoing.
