Accused killer of ‘American Sniper’ Chris Kyle: ‘They wouldn’t talk to me,’ according to report

Eddie Ray Routh's lawyers are trying to prove that he was insane at the time of the murders, and his uncle said he was constantly depressed and paranoid since leaving the service in 2010.

The man accused of killing “American Sniper” Chris Kyle said he did so because “they wouldn’t talk to me,” according to a new report.

A Texas jail deputy testified at Eddie Ray Routh’s double murder trial that he heard Routh, 27, say that he shot Kyle and and Chad Littlefield at a shooting range outside of Ft. Worth in Texas because he sensed that they were avoiding interacting with him, according to a New York Daily News report.

The deputy, Gene Cole, said that Routh said that he felt “bad” about it, “but they wouldn’t talk to me,” and that he is “sure they’ve forgiven me.”

Cole said Routh made the confession in June 2013, about four months after allegedly killing the two men.

A Texas Ranger testified during the trial that he found marijuana and anti-psychotic medication, along with a bottle of whisky, in Routh’s home after the murders had taken place. A note with Kyle’s name and phone number on it was found on his refrigerator.

Prosecutors allege that Routh’s mother had asked Kyle to help her son, as he had been struggling ever since leaving the service in 2010.

Kyle is a former Navy SEAL who has the most confirmed kills of any sniper in U.S. history, and he was subject of the Clint Eastwood film “American Sniper,” which has received an Academy Award nomination for Best Picture. Kyle was portrayed by actor Bradley Cooper.

The three men were at a shooting range when Routh allegedly gunned the other two men down.

Kyle texted Littlefield while they were on the way to the gun range that “this dude is straight up nuts.”

James Watson, who is Routh’s uncle, said he had smoked marijuana with Routh before he left to go shooting, and that he had been called to the house by Routh’s girlfriend after the couple had gotten into a fight, according to the AP report. Watson said Routh was depressed and paranoid, constantly concerned that the government was tracking him.

Routh returned in Kyle’s truck, reportedly saying that he was “driving a dead man’s truck.” Watson initially thought nothing of the remark, saying that Routh often made bizarre comments.

Routh’s lawyers are acknowledging that Routh is the gunman and are trying to convince the court that he was insane at the time of the killings.
