A 22-second video posted on YouTube supposedly captured the incident, and showed the man apparently running away before turning to face the officers and immediately being shot to death.
Police in Washington state gunned down a man who was throwing rocks at them, and video of the incident has sparked protests over alleged excessive force.
The shooting, which took place in Pasco in the tri-cities region, has only inflamed still-burning anger over the recent police killings of unarmed black men in Missouri and New York City, according to a Reuters report.
Police say that officers Ryan Flanagan, Adrian Alaniz, and Adam Wright arrived at Fiesta Foods grocery store parking lot in the late afternoon on Tuesday, and confronted the suspect, Antonio Zambrano-Montes, who began to throw rocks at them.
After trying and failing to incapacitate Zambrano-Montes with a stun gun, the officers pulled their guns and shot him to death when he wouldn’t surrender, according to a statement from police.
Video of the incident was posted on YouTube, and it showed the man fleeing from the oficers when he was killed.
The 22-second video shows the man begin running across the street from the officers, before turning to face them and lifting his arm as if to throw another rock before they open fire on him.
The Seattle Times reported that several dozen people gathered at Pasco City Hall to protest the shooting, and the American Civil Liberities Union of Washington said the incident was “very disturbing,” saying that running from the police and refusing to listen to commands is not reason for deadly force.
Police said two of the officers were struck by the rocks, and they were treated at the scene, although authorities did not provide the extent of their injuries, according to Reuters.
The officers are currently on administrative leave.
