MBTA head Beverly Scott abruptly quits after snowstorms ravage Boston

Scott did not provide any reasoning for her departure in her resignation letter to the board, saying only that she would stay on until April 11 to help smooth the transition.

Beverly Scott has resigned as general manager of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) despite getting the full support from the MassDOT board just hours before.

A series of snowstorms have ravaged the area’s transportation system, dumping feet of snow even as authorities were still digging out of a blizzard from late January, prompting the public to both praise and criticize Scott, according to a Boston Globe report.

However, while not many saw it coming, Scott abruptly announced her resignation in a letter to the board, providing little in the reasoning. She said she would stay on until April 11 until the board could find a replacement, and she thanked them for their support.

As she left her office that evening, Scott told gathered reporters that she “never give[s] up anything” — her only response to the many questions asked.

The news caught Gov. Charlie Baker by surprise, saying that he first head of the decision when the news broke on Wednesday afternoon, and he doesn’t have anyone in mind yet to replace her.

Baker said he wouldn’t be able to speculate on why Scott resigned, noting that such decisions are personal. However, he said that he plans to meet with her on Thursday.

Over the last couple weeks, MBTA train service has been suspended for 24 hours twice due to the huge snowstorms. Baker was disappointed in Boston’s ability to respond to the situation and made that feeling clear publicly earlier this week, but he later clarified his frustration was not directed at Scott.

A former MBTA head told the Globe that he suspected that she “didn’t see any light at the end of the tunnel” with this job.
